The fire that broke out this Saturday morning at a frozen cod plant in Hermidas Sado, in the municipality of Santiago do Casem (Setúbal), is already under control by firefighters, “being in the recovery phase,” civil protection confirmed.
According to a source from the Alentejo Litoral sub-regional emergency and civil defense department, the fire at the plant of the Spanish company Maredeus “is already under control and is currently under liquidation.”
“We are already in the aftermath phase, but the temperature inside is still very high,” added Albano Pereira, deputy mayor of Santiago do Casem, to Luce.
According to the official in charge of civil protection in the municipality, “it is likely that a short circuit caused the fire at the Maredus plant, which employs “about 300 people in total”.
A fire broke out at a factory for the production of frozen cod, located in the light industry zone of Hermidas Sado, in the municipality of Santiago do Casem, the alarm was registered at 09:04.
While fighting the fire, four firefighters were taken to the Litoral Alentejano hospital in Santiago do Casem “due to bad mood”.
“Due to the heat and exhaustion, another firefighter was on the scene,” the Alentejo Litoral subregional emergency and civil protection department added.
During work, there was also an ammonia leak inside the plant, which was “plugged up” in the middle of the day by a group of specialists from the Lisbon Sapper Regiment.
At 20:30, 40 vehicles and 104 operators were at the scene.
Firefighters from Alcacer do Sal, Aljustrel, Alvalade Sado, Beja, Castro Verde, Cercal do Alentejo, Ferreira do Alentejo, Grandola, Odemira, Urique, Santiago do Casem, Santo André and Vila Nova de Milfontes, as well as GNR representatives and teams from the Port Authority of Sines and Algarve and from the Lisbon Engineer Regiment.
