Aussie uses math formula to win jackpot 14 times

The odds of winning the lottery are one in 14 million, but a mathematician Stefan Mandel, an economist from Romania, won it 14 times without breaking the law. In the 1950s, a mathematician developed a formula that allowed him to discover five out of six winning numbers. Four years later, when the formula was improved, Mandel and three friends tested the discovery.

At the time, he was aiming to win second prize, which required only five numbers to be matched, but ended up winning the jackpot. In the 1980s, with money, he decided to move to Australia, get citizenship and try again to win the lottery.

Instead of trying to figure out number six, Mandel thought about getting as many ballots as possible. To do this, he began to look for investors. After some time, he managed to gather a few people who would play the lottery for him, sent him tickets, and as soon as the winner was announced, Mendel would take the prize and distribute part of the money to the “army of buyers”. as the site calls them. Lottery Critic.

Stefan Mandel won the lottery in Australia 12 times, and with each win, the government introduced laws to try and stop the mathematician. First, a law was passed that forbade one person from buying all tickets in the lottery. Mandel hired five partners to buy the tickets. Then another law was passed, according to which a group of persons was forbidden to buy all the tickets in a lottery draw. Once again, Mandel found the solution by starting a company.

After winning the lottery 12 times, 13 times in total, he decided to move again and went to live in the United States of America, a country where monopolization of the market by the player is still not illegal. He moved to Virginia, where the lottery only had 7.1 million number combinations and tickets were among the cheapest on the market.

At one dollar per ticket, he needed about $7.1 million to buy all the lottery combinations. Mandel managed to attract 2,500 investors from Australia, each of whom contributed a dollar. In 1992, two years after arriving in Virginia, when the lottery jackpot reached $27 million, Mandel and his team bought all the tickets.

“I knew I would win first prize, six second prizes, 132 third prizes and thousands of smaller prizes,” he told the website. Planet Money. Mandel’s total profit was 27.50 million euros.
