Cervical cancer self-diagnostic kits will automatically be sent to all women in the Netherlands who turn 30, the Dutch public health institute RIVM announced on July 3, NL Times reported.
RIVM noted that women ages 35 to 60 will automatically receive a home self-sampling kit. The test can detect the presence of the human papillomavirus or HPV, a virus that can cause cervical cancer.
If HPV is detected, the participant will be invited to visit their GP for testing. A test will then be done to detect the presence of abnormal cells.
It is observed that around 900 women in the Netherlands develop cervical cancer every year and 200 people die from this disease. According to the RIVM, without population screening, the number of annual deaths would be 500 people.
