Security for the Paris 2024 Olympics infrastructure has been “slightly beefed up,” Sports Minister Amélie Oudéa-Castera assured on Monday following days of violence in France sparked by the death of a young man by a police officer.
“In the context of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, in recent days we have taken steps to further strengthen infrastructure security,” said Amélie Oudea-Castera on the sidelines of an event focusing on violence in sport.
The minister said that the facilities were already well protected, “with a vigilance and a human presence” which is now stepped up, given that the country is being harmed by what is happening, which is “obviously not good for the image of France.” so the priority is to “end the violence and restore public order”.
Several Olympic venues, notably in Île de France, are in the middle of sensitive areas that have seen rising tensions following the death of 17-year-old de Nael, who was shot dead by a police officer in a traffic operation.
In the five nights of unrest through Sunday morning, about 5,000 cars were burned, 10,000 dumpster fires, nearly 1,000 buildings burned or damaged, 250 attacks on police stations and more than 700 security forces.
Recorded by an amateur video that contradicts the original story told by the police, the point-blank shooting of an officer in Nanterre on June 27 shocked the country, setting off a wave of violence and echoing far beyond France.
“We are all affected, disoriented,” the minister said, adding that “this is an opportunity to repeat the collective emotions after Nahel’s death and that an increase in violence is unacceptable.
Over the past six nights, the riots sparked by the Nanterre incident have led to the arrest of more than 3,200 people across France, French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said during a visit to the city of Reims.
Speaking to the media, Darmanin highlighted the “determination” with which the riot control measures are being taken, stressing that they are “unprecedented” and that the French security forces’ response “is a show of republican strength.”
