According to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), this Thursday, 22 municipalities in the districts of Faro, Castelo Branco, Portalegre and Santarém pose the highest risk of rural fires.
Municipalities of Monchique, Portimão, Silves, Loulé, San Bras de Alportel, Tavira (Faro), Portalegre, Marvão, Castelo di Vide, Nisa, Gavian (Portalegre), Vila Velha de Rodan, Proenca a -Nova, Vila de Rei (Castelo Branco), Masao, Sardoal, Ferreira do Zeseri, Abrantes, Tomar, Vila Nova da Barquinha, Constansia and Chamusca (Santarem).
IPMA has also placed more than 70 municipalities in Faro, Beja, Santarem, Portalegre, Castelo Branco, Portalegre, Leiria, Coimbra, Viseu, Guarda, Vila Real and Bragança at very high risk.
Other municipalities in all counties on the mainland are at high fire risk this Thursday.
Due to hot weather, the fire hazard will continue until at least Monday.
This risk, as defined by IPMA, has five levels, from reduced to maximum, and calculations are made based on air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and rainfall over the past 24 hours.
Since the beginning of the year, 4,150 fires have already affected 9,071 hectares of rural areas.
IPMA predicts cloudy to clear skies on the continent this Thursday with morning cloudiness on the west coast, north on the western coastal strip south of Cabo da Roca and a slight decrease in maximum temperature.
Minimum temperatures will range from 14 degrees Celsius (in Bragança) to 20 (in Castelo Branco and Faro), and maximum temperatures will range from 23 (in Aveiro) to 35 (in Evora).
