The number of migrants who have crossed the Darien Gorge has grown, Panamanian authorities reported, Critica reports July 6.
In June, the number of migrants was 29,722, which is almost double the number of the last two years during the same period. In 2021 there were 10,000 people, and in 2022 – 15,574 people.
On May 11, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Majorcas announced the end of Section 42 border policy, warning that the US border was not open and anyone who crossed it illegally would be prosecuted and deported. In addition, he said that regional centers will be set up in Colombia and Guatemala to process migrants’ requests to enter the country.
April 2023 was the month in which the largest number of illegal immigrants entered Panama through illegal routes to Darién on their way to the United States.
The report indicates that in 2022 the number of migrants reached 248,283 people, but in just six months of this year, the statistics exceed 200,000.
