The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) intends to establish a climate observatory in the Azores and plans to put two meteorological radars into operation in mid-2024, the organization’s president said on Friday.
“Given the privileged position of the autonomous region of the Azores, we intend to create a Climate Observatory, which will also be helped by our competencies and the technologies we have developed,” said José Guerreiro.
The IPMA President, who spoke to reporters at the end of a meeting with the President of the Regional Government (PSD/CDS-PP/PPM) José Manuel Boleiro in Ponta Delgada, said that the project “could be an extremely important tool in terms of studying climate change in the Atlantic region, whose center may be the Azores.
The official also added that IPMA will invest more than five million euros in the installation of two weather radars in the Azores, which should come into operation “at the latest in the middle of next year” and will be installed in San Miguel and Flores.
José Guerreiro also mentioned that IPMA is also acquiring automatic data stations and expanding information “with technology for extreme automatic events” that is already in the testing phase.
In regards to airports, the official ensured that the institute will strengthen its funds so that “it can adequately respond” to the tourism economy.
On the other hand, a process is also being developed related to the laying of “smart cables” (intelligent submarine cables), which will allow “to think differently about what the risks of a tsunami are.”
“The process is being worked out. Technical questions are being investigated, namely what information we are going to collect. It will not only be seismological data. It will also be at the level of biogeochemical data, which is extremely important,” he stressed.
In this context, José Guerreiro emphasized the importance of the future climate observatory for the Atlantic, as it “combines atmospheric information with what can be collected in a body of water.”
