European Commission Vice President Vera Yurova said this Friday at the first annual meeting of the European Media Information Fund (EMIF) that “online platforms are an active battlefield during the Russian invasion of Ukraine.”
A day after the European Commission announced the creation of six new multinational centers to combat disinformation, covering all 27 countries of the European Union, Vera Yurova expressed concern about disinformation about the war in Ukraine in a recorded message for an event that happened this year. Friday at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.
The vice president in charge of the Values and Transparency portfolio said there was a need to increase awareness of the actors responsible for disinformation in order to be able to exploit their vulnerabilities.
Vera Yurova strengthened the role of the observatory and its regional centers, which “already proved their exceptional value in strengthening the fight against disinformation” by identifying more than 1600 cases of “fake news” since the beginning of the war, thus “it is absolutely necessary to limit the spread of disinformation on the Internet.”
Despite the efforts, he said, there is still a lot of misinformation on the Internet, and in order to be able to fight it, it is necessary to strengthen the sources that provide reliable information.
Vera Yurova ends her speech with a reminder that “the fight against disinformation concerns all of us” and that the European Commission will always be ready to take part in joint efforts.
The EMIF annual meeting was organized by the Gulbenkian Foundation and the European University Institute, which supports fact-checking, research and media literacy projects in Europe.
The event aimed to present the results of the first year of EMIF and showcase the work of five supported projects: Associação Godinhela – research and social development, Agence France-Presse (AFP), OKO.press, the International Press Institute and the Transatlantic Foundation. .
The second part of the meeting featured two discussions on facilitating a dialogue on combating disinformation, moderated by Paolo Cesarini, expert on digital single market and media policy, and on funding initiatives to combat disinformation, moderated by Joanna Krawczyk, who has held leadership positions in development MASS MEDIA.
