The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, this Friday, expressed his regret over the death of a Portuguese-American firefighter fighting a fire on a cargo ship in the port of Newark in the United States of America.
“Having learned of the death of firefighter Augusto Acaba, a compatriot who was part of the Newark firefighters and was the victim of a fire on a ship anchored in the port of Newark, in the United States of America, the President of the Republic sympathizes with family and friends, and the Portuguese-American community, to whom he expresses his most sincere condolences,” reads a note published on the official website of the President of the Republic on the Internet.
According to local authorities, as a result of a fire that broke out on Wednesday night, two firefighters were killed and five others were injured.
Augusto Aqaba, a Portuguese-American firefighter who died in the fire, was 45 years old and his family was from the Aveiro area, according to the Luso-Americano newspaper.
The Italian-flagged ship was loaded with over a thousand vehicles when a fire broke out on the 10th floor, quickly spreading to the upper floors.
Authorities have announced an investigation into the cause of the fire.
