Iranian women will again be able to watch football in local stadiums after a long ban, with rare exceptions, the president of the Iranian Football Federation said this Sunday.
“One of the main novelties of this season is that women will be able to enter the stadiums,” Mehdi Taj said during the draw for the competition, which will be attended by 16 teams.
In August 2022, women were exceptionally allowed to watch a game between Esteghlal, then coached by Portuguese Ricardo Sa Pinto, and Mes Kerman, and also in March 2023, when the Iranian team faced Russia, in a private challenge played at Azadi Stadium in Tehran.
However, for more than 40 years, women have been banned from attending matches in stadiums, but in the face of pressure from FIFA in 2019, the international matches of the national team were allowed a female audience, which happened for the first time since the Islamic Revolution of 2019 in 1979.
The president of the organization confirmed that some stadiums in the cities of Isfahan, Kerman and Ahvaz are “ready” to receive spectators during matches. However, he did not name a single stadium in the capital Tehran.
