The celebration of World Youth Day (WYD) will cause restrictions in Lisbon’s Parque das Nações on August 5 and 6, with the reduction of IC2 (an additional route) being envisaged, the municipality announced on Tuesday.
The information is contained in a note posted on Facebook by the parish council of Parque das Nações, signed by the president of that municipality, Carlos Ardisson (CDS-PP), and was shared at a meeting held on Monday, at which a preliminary plan was presented to mobility for WYD.
According to the note, the parish council of Parque das Nações will only have conditions on August 5 and 6, the dates for the ceremonies in the Tejo-Trancão park.
The cessation of traffic on IC2 between 23:50 on August 4 and the night of 6 to 7 is one example of the restrictions that will occur in this area.
However, despite the restrictions tested, a note from the parish council of Parque das Nações notes that there are “no restrictions on the operation of trade and existing services”, and loading and unloading is possible from 00:00 to 07:00. .
On the other hand, small businesses can be supplied from 7:00 am to 10:00 am, with merchants advised to expect supplies “when possible”.
“Residents will be able to access their homes via routes that will be specified once the mobility plan is released, only a large delay in routes is expected due to the thousands of pilgrims who will pass here,” the municipality also points out.
The parish council of Parque das Nações also announces that the opening of the Tejo-Trancão park fence will take place at 8:00 am on August 5, and until that day there will be no pilgrims in this place.
“WYD will end on the 6th after mass, which is expected to end around 11:00 am, and it is expected that the pilgrims will take several hours to leave the fence,” you can also read in the note.
Lisbon has been chosen by Pope Francis for the next World Youth Day, which will take place from August 1st to 6th this year, with the main ceremonies taking place in the Eduardo VII Park and Tagus Park, north of Das Park. Nações, on the banks of the Tagus River, within the municipalities of Lisbon and Loures.
WYD was born at the initiative of Pope John Paul II after the success of the meeting organized in 1985 in Rome as part of the International Year of Youth.
The first meeting took place in 1986 in Rome, having already passed, in its current form, in Buenos Aires (1987), Santiago de Compostela (1989), Czestochowa (1991), Denver (1993), Manila (1995), Paris. (1997), Rome (2000), Toronto (2002), Cologne (2005), Sydney (2008), Madrid (2011), Rio de Janeiro (2013) ), Krakow (2016) and Panama (2019).
This year’s edition, which will be closed by the Pope, was originally scheduled for 2022 but was delayed due to the covid-19 pandemic.
