The Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) has detained a transgender man and an LGBT activist for allegedly donating money to support the Ukrainian army.
In a statement cited by Reuters, the FSB said it was a volunteer for the human rights organization OVD-Info (a non-governmental organization) and that it operated an unspecified “anti-Russian information resource,” but did not name it.
A representative of OVD-Info said that the organization had thousands of volunteers and that it did not know who they were holding.
In April, Russia increased the maximum sentence for high treason to life in prison, according to Reuters. Previously, the sentence was 20 years.
The FSB drew attention to the suspect’s gender identity, calling him “an activist of the LGBT movement who has already changed his gender from female to male.”
According to the same source, Russian President Vladimir Putin presented the recognition of homosexuals and transgender people in Western countries as evidence of moral decay.
