At least three people were killed Sunday and 20 were missing after a bus was hit by a landslide in Colombia’s Risaralda district.
Confirming the accident, Colombian President Gustavo Petro indicated that “from the very beginning, we made every possible effort to save those who were buried alive under a landslide in [no município] from Pueblo Rico, Risaralda.
“Nine people have been rescued, three have died and it is estimated that 20 more people are yet to be found. This is a tragedy,” the head of state complained in a message on his Twitter account.
According to the news agency Efe, one of the victims will be a seven-year-old girl.
A passenger bus en route from Cali to the municipalities of Condoto and Quibdo in the department of Choco (west) was buried with at least 31 passengers after a landslide near Santa Cecilia, a rural area of the municipality of Pueblo Rico.
For his part, Risaralda Governor Victor Manuel Tamayo indicated that rescue operations have been underway in Pueblo Rico since early Sunday morning.
“Together with the Department of Risk Management Coordination and Relief Organizations, we are in the zone to lead the unified command post. [PMU] and will do everything we can to save lives,” he said.
Rescue work in the area was hampered by weather conditions, with incessant rains causing further landslides.
