Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday that “the Wagner Group does not exist” in a legal sense, as Moscow has no law on private military companies. He himself announced the information in an interview with the newspaper. Kommersant and is quoted by Reuters.
Putin also said he made the offer to the mercenaries at a meeting five days after the uprising against the Russian military leadership. In the case, he explains that he gave the military the opportunity to continue the fight for the country, but the leader of the group, Prigozhin, must be removed and replaced with another commander.
“They could all get together in one place and continue to serve [a Rússia]. For them, nothing would change. They will be led by the same person who has been their true commander all this time,” he said.
Recall that on June 24, Russia was declared on alert after a group of Wagner mercenaries announced the start of a rebellion against the country itself. It was about some restrictions with the Ministry of Defense, which neglected the delivery of weapons and ammunition to combatants.
On the same day, Prigozhin admitted that he would retreat with the troops in order to avoid bloodshed.
