The Kremlin said Wednesday it failed to tell South Africa that Putin’s arrest on the basis of an International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant would amount to a declaration of war.
Shortly after the Kremlin’s comments, South Africa announced that the Russian president would not participate in the BRICS summit, which will be held in August in this African country. According to ReutersThe South African Presidency said the decision was “by mutual agreement”.
The ICC accuses Putin and Commissioner for Children Maria Lvova-Belova of the war crime of deporting children from Ukraine to Russia. Moscow says the accusations are false.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa asked the ICC for permission not to detain Putin, taking into account the BRICS summit, as this would be tantamount to a declaration of war.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters before South Africa announced that Putin would not attend the summit that everyone understood – without the need for explanation – that this was an attempt to violate the rights of the Russian president, Reuters reported.
When asked about any Russian warnings about the possibility of war if Putin was detained, Peskov said that “no such language was uttered” and that “no one hinted at this to anyone.”
“It is clear to everyone in this world what an attempt to infringe on the rights of the head of the Russian state is. So there is no need to explain anything to anyone, ”he said.
