The President of the Republic convenes the Council of State to assess the economic, social and political situation in the country after hearing the parties that won seats in Parliament between Friday and Monday.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa had already announced in May that he would convene his political advisory body to discuss “the economic, social and political situation in the country” and emphasized that this was not a meeting “for the exercise of presidential power”, for example, for the resignation of the government or the dissolution of parliament.
“I do not plan any specific actions as the Council of State, unless I understand that there is a reason to talk with the Portuguese on a certain issue. I will make a decision after hearing the Council of State,” said Marcelo Rebelo de Souza.
These statements to journalists at the Lisbon Book Fair came after they expressed a “fundamental disagreement” about keeping João Galamba in government, first in writing and then in a message to the country following the April 26 incidents at the Ministry of Infrastructure.
In his address to the country on May 4, the President of the Republic considered that this option of Prime Minister António Costa to keep João Galamba as minister was costly to the authority of the government and the state, and promised to be “even more attentive and more involved in everyday life.”
In May, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said he was going to hear what advisers think about the evolution of the economy, “how it will develop until the end of the year and next year” and “about the social situation and the political situation.”
“Of course, it will be very useful to hear how state advisers there, in the State Council, will say what they think about economic evolution, social evolution, as well as about the analysis of institutions, their functioning, the judgments they formulate,” he said.
This Friday’s meeting comes one day after the debate on the state of the nation, during which the prime minister said that “political stability was the choice of the Portuguese just over a year ago” and that “it is this option of stability that guarantees continuity of transformative action” and “delivering on commitments.”
Last Friday, the President of the Republic heard the political parties that have seats in Parliament, and the opposition gave a negative diagnosis to the leadership of the PS.
After the debate, SDP leader Luis Montenegro stated that either the government would change its policy or the country should change its government.
The Council of State last met on June 16 to analyze “views on the current situation in Europe” with the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, as a guest.
