Many shops and services were closed this Monday in Iran, the first of three days of a general strike called by social and political organizations to protest the crackdown on recent demonstrations in the country.
Videos posted on social media show closed establishments in major cities such as Isfahan, Shiraz, Sanandaj, Ilam or Urmia.
Videos of closed stores in other cities have also been posted on the Internet, although these are recordings, the authenticity of which could not be verified.
In Tehran, some businesses were threatened with fines if they closed, but many chose not to open their doors.
Kurdish rights group Hengaw said 19 cities in the country’s west have joined the general strike, known as 14-15-16 in the Persian calendar.
In addition to the call to strike, citizens were asked to refrain from shopping during those three days.
In recent weeks, thousands of demonstrators have taken to the streets over a wave of protests sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini, a young Iranian Kurd detained by “morality politics” in Tehran for allegedly wearing the Islamic veil incorrectly.
Amini died a few days after his arrest in the hospital.
Iranian authorities have recorded at least 300 deaths in demonstrations and riots that they attribute to foreign influence.
