Pastelaria Balcão do Marquês, based in Lisbon, has started selling Pope Francis cookies in honor of World Youth Day. In accordance with Newspaper, the idea started as a joke but quickly became a sales success. The establishment has cookies with various images of the Pope, the logo of the World Youth Day and even cookies in the shape of a cross.
The candy store has already made such sweets with the image of anime (Japanese cartoons). Now, to celebrate World Youth Day, Fernando Santos, a pastry chef, has asked pastry chef Manuel Carvalho to start making Pope Francis cookies. What started as a joke has already led to the company producing and selling an average of around 100 units a day.
The process consists of printing images with sugar paste and decorating them with sugar paste, white chocolate or icing.
Each unit costs 2.20 euros and will be on sale until September.
