Guterres urges governments and social media to prevent hate speech and disinformation

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres said on Monday that governments, companies and social media have a responsibility to prevent hate speech, “bullying” and misinformation that “damages human rights, democracy and science.”

“A secure digital space starts with protecting freedom of expression. But it doesn’t end there. Governments, companies and social media platforms have a responsibility to prevent hate speech, bullying and misinformation that undermine human rights, democracy and science,” Guterres said in a Twitter post.

Elon Musk, who in addition to Tesla is also the owner of SpaceX [viagens espaciais]bought Twitter in October for $44 billion (€41.7 billion).

But Musk’s vision of total freedom of expression on the social network is worrying many users, authorities and advertisers who fear a rise in hate messages and misinformation.

At first, the businessman promised to create a content moderation commission responsible for all major decisions, but later decided to restore several accounts, starting with the account of former US President Donald Trump, who was blocked on the social network after the Capitol robbery in January 2021.

Musk has also stopped fighting misinformation related to covid-19 and recently clarified his personal restrictions on freedom of expression in a series of “tweets”.

On Friday, American rapper Kanye West’s Twitter account was suspended for “inciting violence” after he said he admired Hitler.

Elon Musk also said he would not allow far-right US conspiracy theorist Alex Jones to return to social media, who was convicted for alleging that the school massacre was staged by elements of the anti-gun movement.

In response to Kanye West’s remarks, U.S. President Joe Biden on Friday urged U.S. politicians to “condemn and reject anti-Semitism.”

“I just want to make a few things clear: The Holocaust happened. Hitler was a demonic figure. And instead of giving him a platform, our political leaders should denounce and reject anti-Semitism wherever it lurks,” the head of the United States said. state, through the social network Twitter.

Biden also stressed that “silence is complicity,” Europa Press reported.

Also on Friday, French President Emmanuel Macron, who was visiting the United States, said he had a “clear and sincere conversation” with Twitter’s new owner to insist that the social network should increase transparency and “strengthen content moderation.” .

In a series of tweets, Emmanuel Macron also revealed that on Friday in New Orleans, he discussed with the Tesla founder “future green industrial projects such as electric vehicles and batteries,” without giving details. .
