The parliament of Indonesia, the country with the largest Muslim population in the world, approved on Tuesday an amendment to the penal code that criminalizes and punishes adultery and sexual relations outside of marriage with prison terms.
The Vice President of the Indonesian Parliament, Sufmi Dasko Ahmad, declared approval of the proposal, which received the majority of votes in the plenary session. However, the law applies not only to Indonesian citizens, but also to foreigners living in the country. According to a copy of the new Penal Code obtained by the Associated Press (AP), sex outside of marriage is punishable by one year in prison and cohabitation by six months in prison.
