Former MEP Clara Ponsati was arrested this Monday in Barcelona, she tweeted.
“I was again illegally detained in Barcelona,” she wrote.
The Catalan independent left for Spain despite the fact that an arrest warrant was pending for her. The former MEP was first arrested in March this year after five years of running from Spanish justice.
The court released her on the condition that she appear before Spain’s Supreme Court on 24 April. Failing to appear in court that day and without giving reasons for his absence, the court issued an arrest warrant that does not provide for imprisonment.
Ponsati participated in Catalonia’s 2017 independence bid and was accused, along with other party colleagues, of disobedience to Spanish justice.
Ponsatí was part of the “Together for Catalonia” company, owned by Carles Puigdemno, who is in Belgium to escape justice. In addition to the party leader, several politicians were expelled from Spain after the referendum.
