The President of the People’s Party (PP), Alberto Nunez Feijoo, said he would start negotiations to lead a new government in Spain. “My duty is to start a dialogue to try to govern our country,” he said Sunday night after winning the legislative election.
Feihoo emphasized the vote received by the right-wing conservatives. “Never before has our party risen with such intensity in a general election. We won in 40 of the 52 provinces and autonomous cities of Spain. We have surpassed the PSOE in terms of the number of votes and mandates,” he stressed.
Feijoo also took the opportunity to ask “the Socialist Party and the rest of the political forces not to block the Spanish government anymore.”
The winning party managed to elect 136 deputies, 47 more than in the previous elections in 2019. However, the result was not enough to achieve an absolute majority, even taking into account the mandates won by VOX from the extreme right.
