Globo, Brazil’s largest broadcaster, was ordered to pay compensation to goalkeeper Sidau for humiliating him live on television after a Brazilian championship game.
On May 12, 2019, when Brazil celebrated Mother’s Day, Globo broadcast the game between Santos and Vasco da Gama.
Goalkeeper Vasco made several decisive mistakes during the match and Vasco da Gama lost 3–0 to King Pelé.
Near the end of the game, Globo opened a poll to the public to choose “Craque do Jogo” and the audience voted for goaltender Sidao in an obvious joke and derision.
Despite this, the broadcaster presented the trophy to the goalkeeper live after the game.
“The broadcaster could have simply not awarded the trophy to the author, saving him from such humiliation and disgrace on national television,” lawyers representing the player said in statements cited by Uol.
“The damage to his image was immeasurable and after what happened his career went into decline,” they added, referring to the 40-year-old who now represents Serie D Concordia.
Globo’s lawyers claimed to have apologized to Sidao and changed the rules, choosing “Craque do Jogo” to take into account expert opinion.
The broadcaster was ordered to pay 30,000 reais (5,730 euros) in the second instance and can still appeal.
