Saudi Arabia to host Asian Cup 2027

Saudi Arabia was the only candidate to host the 2027 Asian Cup of Nations after another competitor, India, withdrew its candidacy.

In a statement, the AFC confirmed that the Football Association of India withdrew from the selection process without stating a reason for the withdrawal.

Proposals from India and Saudi Arabia were selected by the AFC executive committee in October and a final decision is expected to be made at the regional congress in February.

The Asian Nations Cup brings together 24 teams and is held every four years.

Qatar won the last tournament in 2019, which was held in the United Arab Emirates.

Qatar, host of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, will host the 2023 Asian Cup after China stepped down in May due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the AFC announced in October.

South Korea and Indonesia were two other countries that entered into a dispute over hosting the final phase of the continental tournament after China’s resignation.

The organization of the 2023 contest was entrusted to China in June 2019, and the competition was to be held in 10 Chinese cities between June 16 and July 16 next year.

But in May of this year, China pulled out of hosting the event due to rising cases of Covid-19 in the country.
