Colmar’s deputy prosecutor said on Thursday that a recreation center for people with disabilities in Winzenheim, eastern France, which burned down on Wednesday, killing 11 people, did not meet fire safety standards.
“The premises did not pass mandatory security checks” and “did not have the necessary characteristics to receive people,” said Natalie Kielwasser.
The recreation center, a recently renovated old barn, has been fitted with smoke detectors, “but not enough for this type of building,” the deputy prosecutor said.
On Wednesday, French authorities found eleven bodies in the building. The blaze forced the nursing home to be evacuated, and there are still records of two users requiring medical attention.
