“Marine police units on a mission in Italy as part of Frontex’s Operation Themis were intercepted late yesterday. [sexta-feira]”August 11, two kayaks with two migrants each, four nautical miles (approximately seven kilometers) from the island of Pantelleria,” the National Maritime Authority said today.
Police rushed to the scene after the Local Coordinating Center (Guarda di Finanza) received an alert, finding four migrants showing signs of dehydration and fatigue. Only three had life jackets.
The migrants were rescued and taken to the port of Pantelleria “where the Italian authorities were waiting for them”.
Since June 14, the Maritime Police has been part of the Themis joint operation, whose task is to monitor the maritime borders of Italy and the external borders of the European Union.
The NCIS has completed more than 500 missions since 2017, when they began their involvement in the operation.
On Friday, the National Maritime Authority announced that NCIS had intercepted a boat in the Mediterranean Sea carrying 11 migrants who also showed signs of dehydration and fatigue and were without life jackets.
