A course on gender issues for prison staff was organized by the Mexico City Human Rights Commission (Codem) in relation to the fact that a transgender inmate sexually abused a woman in the cell where they were both held in prison. Chalco, reported the newspaper El Universal. August 15th.
A prisoner at Chalco prison asked for help after a transgender man was transferred to the women’s section of the prison. The transgender assaulted his cellmate and committed sexual violence. The transgender man demanded silence from the woman, threatening that otherwise her accomplices would go free and harm her children.
When placing a transsexual (biological male) with female prisoners, prison officials failed to take into account that the transsexual had a prior rape conviction. In connection with this case, prison officers received 30 hours of training on gender issues over a period of five weeks.
