Fast food chain Burger King has removed tomatoes from packaging and hamburgers at many of its restaurants in India after prices more than quadrupled due to rising food prices that hit the world’s most populous country.
“Even tomatoes need a holiday… we can’t put tomatoes in our food,” said ads posted at two Burger King outlets in India, Reuters reported.
The hamburger chain, one of India’s largest with around 400 outlets, is joining many McDonald’s and Subway restaurants that have removed tomatoes from their menus.
Food inflation in India hit its highest level since January 2020 this week. Retail inflation data for July released this week shows vegetable prices up 37% year-on-year.
To deal with the supply crisis, India began importing tomatoes from Nepal and set up vans to distribute the staple at lower prices throughout the country.
