The head of emergency services on the US island of Maui, Hawaii, resigned this Thursday after he was criticized for not turning on warning sirens while putting out a fire.
In accordance with washington postMaui Mayor Richard Bissen said he had accepted “the resignation of the head of emergency services, Administrator Herman Hendaye.”
“Referring to the state of health, Andaya submitted a letter of resignation with immediate effect,” the mayor explained.
“Given the severity of the crisis we are facing, my team and I will assign someone to their key role as soon as possible,” said Richard Bissen.
During the fires, official warnings on TV, radio and cell phones proved useless for many residents without electricity and the internet.
This Thursday, the number of people killed in the fires in Hawaii rose to 110. Hundreds of people are still missing.
