Mozambique created almost 63,000 jobs in the first quarter

Mozambique’s government estimates that the country created almost 63,000 jobs in the first quarter of this year, higher than expected but only 16% of the projected total for 2023, according to official data collected on Tuesday by Lusa.

According to the economic and social balance of state budget execution from January to March, 62,799 jobs were created in the public and private sectors during this period, up from 58,822 originally planned by the government for the first quarter.

However, these figures are below the expected progress for this year, in which the government expects to close with the creation of 381,759 jobs, while the forecast for 2024 indicates the creation of more than 2.9 million new jobs in both sectors.

Mozambique created 371,388 jobs in 2022, up from 288,981 in 2021 and 253,542 in 2020, according to official government figures, but down from 2019 before the covid-19 crisis, and then terrorist attacks to the north. when Mozambique created 478,904 jobs in one year.

The public administration contributed to job creation from January to March this year, creating 2,046 jobs, while the private sector created 41,613 people. The document also talks about public sector intervention to create conditions for another 6,914 jobs, hiring 5,210 foreign workers and another 1,016 to work abroad, including in mines and farms.

“It is also worth noting the promotion of 1,429 professional internships from a plan of 1,245 for the analyzed period, which corresponds to the implementation of 115%,” the document also notes.

In the labor and social security sector, 3,650 new taxpayers, as well as 28,034 employees and 764 self-employed, were registered from January to March, and audits were conducted in 1,307 businesses covering 10,319 workers, the report notes.

Mozambique’s gross domestic product (GDP) rose 4.67% in the second quarter, thanks to growth in the commodity sector, according to a national accounts report released this month by the National Institute of Statistics (INE) of Mozambique.

These figures add to the 4.17% recorded from January to March, also in similar terms, bringing cumulative economic growth in the first half to 4.42%, according to INE.

According to the government forecast, in 2023 Mozambique’s economy will grow by 5%.
