Mozambican police and wildlife inspectors launched an operation to find a lion that killed and ate a woman in a village in Nyasa province in the country’s north, it was announced on Tuesday.
“The victim, whose age could not be determined, was attacked and eaten by a lion,” Mirza Maguanda, spokeswoman for the provincial police department of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM), explained in statements to the media.
The attack in the village of Mbamba, Mekula district, northwest of Nyasa province and close to the border with Tanzania, took place at night when the victim, caught off guard by the animal, was about to go to the toilet.
Mirza Maguanda added that the warning about the attack was originally issued by people close to the victim on August 18, and later the police confirmed this case and formed a multidisciplinary team, which included, in addition to the police, also inspectors of flora and fauna. wild nature.
“At the moment, the brigade continues to work to find the animal in order to scare it away and, in case of emergency, kill the animal,” a police spokeswoman explained.
According to Mozambique’s National Administration of Conservation Areas, out of the country’s 154 areas, 45 are considered critical in terms of the emergence of “wildlife” conflicts, causing the destruction of crops and, in some cases, attacks on people, culminating in death.
