The Danish Ethics Council will review the country’s abortion rules. This was reported on December 11 by the newspaper Jyllands-Posten.
Remember that in Denmark you can terminate a pregnancy before the end of the 12 week. Currently, to have an abortion at a later date, you must apply to the Abortion Board, where the sponsor, psychiatrist and gynecologist will decide whether to reject or they approve the request.
Therefore, Denmark has some of the strictest temporary restrictions on abortion in Western Europe. In Sweden, Iceland, the Netherlands, France and Belgium, it is possible to abort later in the pregnancy.
The newspaper noted that the Ethics Council had not reviewed the abortion rules since 2007.
“It has been a long time since the Ethics Council considered the rules of abortion, and there are currently many conflicts in this area on the European and American continents,” – said the chairman of the council Leif Vestergaard Pedersen.
She explained that council members must weigh a woman’s ability to make an independent decision on the issue of terminating a pregnancy at later stages.
According to the publication, in 2021 in Denmark, 803 women wanted to have an abortion at a later date. 53 were denied and the rest were given permission to terminate the pregnancy.
