Sebastián Menesplier, the president of the CGT Mining and Energy Federation (CGT, General Confederation of Labor), Sebastián Menesplier, wrote on August 22 in La Marseillaise.
The general secretary of the Federation of Mines and Energy CGT (FNME-CGT) will appear before the gendarmes on September 6 in Montmorency (Val d’Oise department, in north-central France).
As La Marseillaise points out, this is the first time this has happened in recent decades. “Never in decades has the leader of the CGT, who is also the general secretary of the FNME, been held responsible for union actions committed by members of the CGT”— she said indignantly in a press release from the National Federation of Mines and Energy.
“Our Secretary General is called because he is suspected of committing or attempting to commit the crime of “putting others at risk by someone through a manifestly intentional violation of regulatory obligations of security or discretion.”says the FNME-CGT press release, condemning “the decision on union repression taken at the highest level of the State, which has just reached a new milestone.”
On the day of the interrogation, the federation organizes a demonstration of national support in front of the gendarmerie, but also calls on all electricians and gas workers to go on strike on September 6 at 9am, during interrogation hours.
Many progressives denounced this attempt to criminalize union action.
Thus, the communist senator from Bouches-du-Rhône established contact with “Electricians and gas workers summoned to Marseille on September 15”. The National Secretary of the PCF, Fabien Roussel, demonstrated his “pfull solidarity with Sebastian Menesplie” and said: “No” to union repression! “No” to government attempts to question fundamental freedoms! “Yes” to the state energy service!
