The two cats were found in the UK after a three-day truck ride from Portugal. In accordance with VetTimesthe animals will have a new home after undergoing veterinary treatment in the English town of Northamptonshire.
The cats, now named Mango and Smudge, were four weeks old when they were found on a shipping pallet.
The animals are in quarantine, where they will stay for a few more weeks after the initial treatment.
The cats were considered healthy, although they were still weak, hungry and dehydrated. They have already begun to recover after the start of treatment.
“It was extremely important to keep them in complete isolation as they came to the UK without any vaccines and there are some diseases in Portugal that we have not seen in this country for a long time,” said clinic administrator Lauren Walker.
“The kittens were placed in our oxygen chamber with special contact from the staff and strict cleaning measures to completely minimize any risks,” he added.
Walker also said the relevant authorities have been notified because felids are classified as “undocumented animals.”
