Russian President Vladimir Putin reacted for the first time to the death of Wagner Group leader Yevgeny Prigozhin, thereby confirming his death. “He was a talented businessman,” he said.
Vladimir Putin also said that he had known the leader of the Wagner group “since the 90s” and expressed his condolences to the victims of the plane crash, Reuters reports.
“I want to note that these people have made a significant contribution to our common cause of fighting the neo-Nazi regime in Ukraine, we remember this, we know and will not forget,” Putin said.
“The examination will take time. Let’s see what the investigators say,” he added.
Russian investigators opened a criminal case, but there was no official statement from Moscow regarding the incident.
According to Reuters, two US officials said Washington believed the plane was shot down by a Russian surface-to-air missile, but the information is preliminary and under review.
