According to the latest report from the Observatory on Student Accommodation published at the beginning of the month, the average price of rooms and apartments for students increased by 10.5% last year, exceeding 400 euros in Lisbon and Porto.
According to an analysis based on more than 20 real estate portals and agency “websites” in the private sector in 20 county capitals, 2,892 rooms were available.
According to this Friday in the newspaper PublicIn most counties, growth was over 10.5% of the national average, with growth of 33%, as in the case of Portalegre.
The exceptions are the regions of Beja, Bragança and Porto, where the growth was less than 10%.
However, renting a room in Porto costs an average of 425 euros per month, while in Lisbon it costs 450 euros.
Setúbal from €350, Faro from €339 or Aveiro from €320 are other cities where the cost of living is high.
Some academic associations heard Public said they had received reports of very high prices “practiced in a regulated market” where houses and rooms are rented out without receipts.
Apart from the prices charged, another problem reported by students is the need to pay two or three rents up front.
The observatory report is published by the Directorate General of Higher Education (DGES) and “managed” by Alfredo Real Estate Analytics, a Portuguese startup that has been working on it for three years now.
This weekend, the results of the first stage of the national competition for access to higher education will be announced.
