Putin demands loyalty to Wagner group fighters

Vladimir Putin ordered Wagner Group troops to sign an oath of allegiance to the Russian state following a deadly plane crash that killed the former head of the mercenary group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, Reuters reported.

The Russian president ordered it to go into effect immediately on Friday after the Kremlin said Western claims that Prigozhin was assassinated on his orders were “an absolute lie.” According to Reuters, the Kremlin has refused to definitively confirm the death of Wagner, the leader of the group, citing the need to wait for test results.

The obligatory oath of the fighters of the Wagner group and other privates is intended to bring them under stricter state control. The decree requires anyone working on behalf of the military or supporting what Moscow calls its “special military operation” in Ukraine to take a formal oath of allegiance to Russia, promising to strictly follow the orders of senior commanders and leaders.
