Three US Marines have died after a helicopter crashed during a military exercise on the Tiwi Islands in northern Australia on Sunday.
According to Reuters, there were 23 military personnel on board in an MV-22B Osprey helicopter. Five more people were “taken to the Royal Darwin Hospital in serious condition,” the agency said, cited by the agency.
“Our focus as Government and Department of Defense is on incident response and ensuring full support and assistance is provided during this difficult time,” said the Australian Prime Minister.
According to sky newsAbout 2,500 people from Australia, the United States, the Philippines, Indonesia and East Timor took part in the exercise.
The US and Australia have stepped up military cooperation in recent years in the face of an increasingly assertive China.
