Hitachi and Tobu Railway are preparing for commissioning a biometric identification system that can recognize users by face and finger veins. This was announced on August 29 by the Japanese television channel NHK.
According to the developers, the new system will allow customers to make payments and accumulate loyalty points without using credit cards for payment, which will simplify shopping and reduce congestion at store checkouts.
For example, store clerks will no longer have to ask for identification when registrants purchase alcohol.
The new system is expected to be installed in self-service kiosks in select Tokyo supermarkets in April 2024.
The same system is expected to be implemented in gyms and hotels to mitigate the effects of staff shortages.
“We hope that the biometric identification system will be the solution to the problem of labor shortage”said Hitachi’s Takahiro Yoshida.
The company adds that it is confident in the prospects of widespread use of the new system, as it provides a high level of security.
Please note that Japan is currently experiencing a labor shortage and is doing its best to resolve this issue.
