U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo said Tuesday at a meeting in Beijing with Chinese Premier Li Qiang that the United States and China should “do more together” to solve the world’s problems.
“I believe the world expects us to do more together to address these issues,” Raimondo said, citing “climate change, artificial intelligence or the fentanyl crisis” as global concerns.
The US representative also said that she “agrees that trade relations can be the basis of relations” between the two countries.
“President Biden asked me to come here and deliver the message that we don’t want to disengage. We are committed to maintaining our $700 billion trade relationship with China,” he added.
Li Qiang replied to Raimondo that the “politicization” of trade issues by the US would have “catastrophic consequences,” according to the official Xinhua news agency.
The announcements came on the third day of Raimondo’s visit to China as the two countries try to ease bilateral tensions through several high-level meetings in recent months.
Gina Raimondo became the fourth US leader to visit China this year, following the June visit of Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, who visited the country in July, and climate envoy John Kerry. .
On Monday, following a meeting between Raimondo and his Chinese counterpart Wang Wentao, Beijing and Washington agreed to set up a working group to try to resolve trade disputes.
The US Commerce Secretary’s visit to China ends on Wednesday.
