Ukrainian energy company Naftogaz announced on Tuesday that it had discovered new natural gas reserves in an unspecified area that could reach 1 billion cubic meters and allow the country to become independent of supplies from Russia.
“The discovery of new fields may allow the country to move towards full energy independence from Russia,” the Ukrainian company Naftogaz said in a statement.
The obtained geological information indicates that “reserves of this new field may reach one billion cubic meters of gas,” the company said in a statement, in which it refers to the conclusions made during the exploration work for which drilling was carried out. at a depth of more than 4000 meters.
He continues: “By increasing reserves, we create the prospect of sustainable growth in gas production,” said Oleg Tomachev, CEO of UkrGazdobycha, Naftogaz’s exploration subsidiary.
The report recalls that recently Naftogaz put into operation two gas wells, which allow to produce more than 430,000 cubic meters of natural gas per day.
Since 2014, Ukraine has been striving to stop importing gas from Russia directly or through intermediaries.
Gas supplies have been one of Russia’s most effective ways of influencing Ukraine since the country declared independence in 1991.
