The procedure for obtaining visas upon arrival in Egypt was canceled for Canadian tourists by the Egyptian authorities, the Egyptian Embassy in Canada notified the Canadian side on August 30, CBC reports.
Previously, Canadian travelers could obtain an e-Visa through an online portal before leaving for Egypt or upon arrival at Cairo airport. Starting October 1, they will need to obtain a visa at the Egyptian embassy or consulate in Canada.
Canadians with Egyptian citizenship will also need to apply for a visa; previously, with an Egyptian passport or birth certificate, this was not necessary.
It should be noted that the Egyptian side explained that such measures are introduced in response to a change in the rules for Egyptian citizens by Canada. The Egyptian side said in a statement that such measures were “of an offensive nature to the dignity of the Egyptian state”.
The radio and television company notes that it has not received any comments from either the Egyptian or Canadian sides. The situation was commented by the president of the Egyptian-Canadian business network, Adele Boulos.
It is increasingly difficult for Egyptians to come to Canada, – he said. — I have cases, incredible things, like parents who want to see their children, people who get married here and want their parents and relatives to come, but they can’t… It’s crazy.”. According to him, up to 300,000 Egyptians live in Canada.
The restrictions placed on Canadian passport holders will take effect on September 3, Canada’s Department of Foreign Affairs has confirmed.
