The European Union (EU) and Ukraine have acceded to a convention that came into force this Friday that establishes the recognition of 27 decisions made by Ukrainian courts and vice versa, as well as their enforcement.
“The Hague Judgment Convention came into force today, guaranteeing the international recognition and enforcement of judgments given by the courts of other countries in civil and commercial cases. EU and Ukraine joined […]. More countries are expected to join in the future,” the European Commission said in a statement released this Friday.
European Commissioner for Justice Didier Reynders, quoted in the note, believes that “legal uncertainty” could lead to “many people giving up their rights.”
According to the commissioner, the convention will strengthen “international unity and cooperation” as well as the administration of justice “in an increasingly globalized world” that “cannot be limited by borders.”
“The more countries that join the convention, the more effective our solutions will be. Citizens and businesses will benefit from a treaty that will promote trade and investment between the EU and Ukraine,” he added.
