The hottest winter on record was recorded in Australia in June-August 2023, and spring will also be warmer than usual, according to the Bureau of Mainland Meteorology (BoM), broadcast on Sky News Australia on September 1.
BoM data showed that the national average winter temperature in 2023 was 1.54°C higher than the average from 1961 to 1990. This is the warmest winter since 1996, when the record was 1.46°C above the average.
New South Wales, Queensland and Tasmania experienced the highest temperature rise on record. Meanwhile, average temperatures in all other states and territories are among the 10 warmest on record.
Dr. Carl Braganza, director of Climate Services at the BoM, said experts are also forecasting a warmer-than-usual spring this year. “For this spring, the forecast shows that most areas have a high chance of below-average precipitation, and many areas have a higher chance of an unusually dry spring.”said the climatologist.
Higher air temperatures are expected to be observed in southwestern Australia and some eastern regions of the continent. Consequently, an increased threat of dangerous and destructive fires is forecast for New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia and the Northern Territory this year.
