Two workers died and dozens were injured this Friday, at least 12 of them in serious condition, after a massive explosion at a steel plant in the Brazilian city of Cabreuva, in the interior of Sao Paulo, Brazil. According to the first information, the total number of victims could reach 50.
Apparently, the cause of the tragedy was the explosion of a boiler that fed a large aluminum melting furnace, but only the expert opinion of firefighters can confirm this hypothesis or not. All non-emergency care in the hospitals of Cabreuva and neighboring towns such as Jundiai has been suspended so that medical workers can devote themselves to helping the injured at the steel plant.
Neighboring towns have also sent firefighters and civil protection teams to Cabreuva to step up rescue and care efforts for the injured. Cabreuva is a peaceful and prosperous city of 47,000 inhabitants located 87 km from Sao Paulo.
The São Paulo government sent helicopters to transport the most seriously injured to hospitals in the state capital. In addition to the workers directly affected by the massive explosion more than five kilometers away from the company’s location, others were hit by the wreckage of the destroyed steel plant.
No deaths were reported in Lisbon until around 2:00 pm local time and 6:00 pm, authorities said. But the seriousness of the injuries of some of the workers affected by the explosion led to an even more tragic outcome of the accident at the time.
