The new Patriarch of Lisbon, Rui Valeriu, this Saturday welcomed the victims of “all kinds of abuses”, to whom he expressed solidarity while speaking at his inauguration ceremony.
“With you I will bear the essence of your suffering,” said the prelate, who spoke after taking office this Saturday in the Patriarchal Cathedral of Lisbon before the Cabido da Sé, or college of consultants.
Quoted by the agency EcclesiaD. Rui Valerio also addressed young people, noting that with World Youth Day they “became the main guardians of the Word that the Holy Spirit sent to the Lisbon Church.”
“You are called to express it, and we are ready to accept it,” he stressed.
D. Rui Valerio also stated that the Catholic event promoted “commitment to evangelism and the path of synodalism” between priests and laity.
On August 10, the Vatican announced the appointment of the Bishop of the Armed and Security Forces as the new Patriarch of Lisbon.
Rui Valerio, who worked for several years as a priest in the Patriarchate, succeeded Manuel Clemente, who resigned due to age restrictions.
