The authorities of the French overseas department of Mayotte took emergency measures to limit the consumption of drinking water, reports France Info on September 3.
Due to the severe drought in Mayotte, the authorities decided to restrict water consumption. As of Monday, September 4, drinking water on the island will be completely cut off for two days out of three.
For several months, the inhabitants of the island have lived in a regime of frequent water cuts. Residents have been preparing for this event, but remain very concerned.
“What do we do? We will drink water from the sea.asks one of the women. “We don’t have water to shower or wash the children’s clothes”she says.
The reason for the water shortage is a historic drought, the worst in a quarter of a century, due in part to a lack of rain. The two largest reserves are only a quarter full. Without drastic measures, the reserves would be depleted in a few days.
To avoid tensions, Philippe Vigier, Minister Delegate for Overseas Territories, who visited the department on Saturday, September 2, decided to give residents bottles of drinking water.
Starting this Monday, pregnant women, children and the elderly receive 2 liters of water a day, which for some seems insufficient. In total, the water restrictions affect 300,000 people.
