The surgery department building in the western Ukrainian city of Lviv will be designed by Japanese architect Shigeru Ban. This was announced on September 5 by the Japanese television channel NHK.
The hospital will be used to help people who were injured during the fighting in Ukraine, the channel writes.
The hospital construction plan was presented at a press conference in Tokyo by Lvov Mayor Andrey Sadovy and a Japanese architect.
Construction is expected to start in the summer of 2024 and Ukrainian construction materials will be used. According to the participants, it is expected to raise some 80 million dollars with the support of the international community to cover the construction costs.
Sadovyi claimed that the request to design the hospital came from him.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon stressed that construction must begin immediately.
The Lviv mayor noted that Ukraine now needs Japanese experience, knowledge and technology to improve medical care.
The Japanese TV channel noted that about 150,000 refugees from other regions of Ukraine currently live in Lviv. The population of the city is 700,000 inhabitants.
