A massive fire that broke out late on Monday and continued into the early hours of Tuesday completely destroyed 150 wooden houses in the Rádio Clube slum in the Brazilian city of Santos on the coast of Sao Paulo state. There is no information about the dead, but about two dozen people were hospitalized due to minor burns or smoke inhalation.
Hundreds of people (the exact number has not yet been determined this Tuesday morning) were left homeless and were first taken to the city club and school, where they were provided with food, mattresses and other care. Representatives of the various secretariats of the municipality will gather to determine actions to support those who not only lost the house they lived in, but were left with nothing, as what little they had was burned down by the flames.
The accident began around 22:30 local time (2:30 Lisbon), and six hours after the tragedy began, shortly after 4:00, firefighters said the fire had been extinguished and left the scene. But around 9:00 am this Tuesday and 1:00 pm in the Portuguese capital, TV Globo showed that fires still existed in some houses, small ones, but which could spread to the few houses that did not burn down, and even to those in the neighboring slums, since the wind blew with great force and could carry sparks.
The modest dwellings of the Radio Club slums were built on thick piles driven into mangroves flooded by ocean waters. The houses are only accessed by narrow pieces of wood where only one foot can sometimes fit, making it difficult for firefighters to do their job.
