Embassy of Portugal in Peru advises against traveling within the country

The Portuguese embassy in Peru is advising against domestic travel due to the current political instability that is “giving rise to social conflicts”, warning of the difficulty of intervening in the most remote areas.

“The power of the central authorities in the most remote areas is fragile, so the possibilities for intervention are limited,” the Portuguese embassy in Lima points out through the diplomatic portal.

In the same note regarding “current political instability”, non-essential travel, in particular by road, is “impeded” by frequent roadblocks.

“If you are forced to travel, you must be accompanied by documents and provided with water and food in case of possible disturbances (such as roadblocks or demonstrations that can block traffic for many hours),” the notice says.

This warning comes at a time when it is known that the Portuguese are locked in a hotel and cannot return to Portugal, given the situation in the country.

On Wednesday, the government of head of state Dina Boluarte declared a state of emergency across the country for a period of 30 days “to combat acts of vandalism and violence committed during protest demonstrations.”

On the other hand, former President Pedro Castillo will be detained for another 48 hours.

Castillo was arrested after he dissolved Congress in an attempt to push through constitutional changes to avoid trial.

Castillo’s position was considered by members of the government, including current President Boluarte, to be a “coup d’état”.

The decree, published on Wednesday, indicates that the National Police of Peru exercises control over internal order with the support of the armed forces.

During a state of emergency, constitutional rights relating to the inviolability of the home, freedom of movement and freedom of assembly are suspended.

Over the past 24 hours, a group of demonstrators protesting against the government and Congress have burned down several public facilities in the provincial municipality of Espinar, Cusco region, in the south of the country.

Protests against the head of state erupted on Sunday, leaving eight people dead, more than fifty policemen injured and the number of demonstrators unspecified.
